곰과 두 나그네.

두 남자가 함께 여행을 하다가 갑작스레 나타난 한 마리의 곰과 마주쳤다.
한 사람은 재빨리 나무에 올라가서 가지 사이로 몸을 숨겼다.
다른 한 사람은 꼼짝없이 곰에게 공격을 당할 것이라고 생각하며, 땅바닥에 납작하게 몸을 엎드렸다.
곰이 곁에 다가와 코끝으로 건드려 보고 킁킁거리며 냄새를 맡자 그는 숨을 멈추고 죽은 시늉을 했다.

일반적으로 곰은 죽은 시체에는 손을 대지 않기 때문에 곧 그의 곁을 떠나갔다.
곰이 가버리자 나무에 올라갔던 나그네는 친구에게로 내려와 즐겁게 농담을 하듯 물었다.

“곰이 자네 귀에다 대고 무어라고 속삭이던가?”
그러자 친구는 진지하게 대답했다.

“곰이 내게 이렇게 충고하더군. 위기에 닥쳤을 때, 친구를 버리는 그런 친구는 절대로 함께 하지 말라고 하네.”

Two men were traveling together, when a Bear suddenly crossed their path. one of men climbed quickly into a tree, and tried to conceal himself in its branches.
The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat upon the ground, and when the Bear came up, felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, feigning death.

The Bear soon left him, for it is said that a Bear will not touch a dead body. When the Bear had gone, the Traveler in the tree came down to join his companion, and, as a pleasant joke, inquired, "What was it that the Bear whispered in you ear?"
His friend replied very gravely. "He gave me this bit of advice;
"Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of
danger."
